Inspired by Zoë Brown - TV and radio presenter

Zoë Brown is a South African TV and radio presenter. She started her commercial radio journey in 2014 at KFM and in 2015 she joined the Exresso Morning Show on SABC. She has also co-hosted an afrikaans reality show called “Trap Dis My Huis” on Via TV. In this interview she shares how she self care and stay motivated in her work.


Nowadays, what are you most grateful for?

I’m extremely grateful for my health! So many people I know that were fit and healthy have been battling the side-effects from Covid.

Every person's idea of self-care is different, please tell us about yours?

Self-care is taking time for myself. As a freelancer my time is often spent on multiple things at once and I often neglect myself. Once a month I set a weekend aside which I call my “NO-Weekend”. Any bookings or requests or invitations that fall on that weekend I decline, so that I’m guaranteed one weekend a months all to myself to do what I feel like doing on the day.

What changes have you made to your lifestyle in terms of wellness since the pandemic?

I’ve started taking my fitness routine more seriously. I started following Stephanie Stander’s (TWS) at home workout programmes and meal plans and it has transformed my life! It was a slow and steady journey, but one that I wish I had started earlier. I went from a size 12 to a size 8 and that’s simply from following her meal plan and doing her workouts 5 days a week (35-45min per session).


What motivates you to prioritise your health and wellbeing?

I did a DNA analysis a few years ago and the results were shocking! I am genetically predisposed for heart disease. But by living a healthy and balanced lifestyle, I’m giving myself the best possible future. Our DNA is like a loaded gun, our lifestyles are the trigger. If I live a healthy one, I would (hopefully) not trigger those scary genes.

Being the best version of yourself professionally and personally daily is your commitment to self - how do you keep this at the forefront when life becomes too busy?

I haven’t figured this one out yet. I listen to my body and I can feel I need to rest, but I always push it to the limit which I hope to stop doing. I have an incredible support system – and I know I can rely on them. They’re often my truth mirror in life – and call me out on my busy lifestyle and schedule. It helps to have people in my corner to hold me accountable to myself.

How do you deal with periods characterised by a lack of inspiration or procrastination in your life and work?

These come and go all the time! I find taking a trip down memory lane to be extremely helpful. Life gets busy and it often feels like I’m just going through day to day, but once I look back I can see the growth and differences. And when I really feel demotivated – I find doing an activity with friends to do the trick too!

What has been the most enriching travel experience for you and why?

Doing Yachtweek with my friends! We ended up island hopping, going to the best parties and swimming not stop in warm turquoise waters. I loved the feeling of freedom I felt and I said yes to things I never would have done at home. 😊

What do you do to unwind or treat yourself?

I love some pampering – the best type of pampering is a foot massage or a medi-pedi! Love love love having my feet feeling silky smooth and soft.
 

What is the most important lesson you have learned about success?

Never to loose sight of who I am, where I come from and where I want to go to.

What advice can you offer people who are in a rut?

Do something small that is out of your routine. Whether it is writing in a gratitude journal, switching your TV time for music or go for a walk. Small changes can inspire you to get out of a rut.

What do you want your legacy to be?

Despite your circumstances or environment, choose love and kindness.

Your parting wisdom?

You can’t always control your first thought, but you can control your second thought and first action. Always choose kindness.

Wine/Food/Holiday Destination to feed the soul?

I find visiting my parents and best friend in Durban to be the antidote to my soul! My mom cooks the best food and seeing my family and friends are always refreshing. Plus, Durban is always warm when the rest of the country is cold!
